My earliest memory of yoga is with my dad in our living room when I was about five or six years old. I still have a picture of him in all his hippie glory posed in a headstand in a field full of daisies!!.  It wasn’t until after my second child was born that I was drawn to the practice. I took my first studio class in 2012 and although my curiosity was piqued, I had a less than stellar experience. All of my insecurities about not belonging, not being seen, not being flexible enough to do the practice were brought up in that first class.

It took me two months to build the courage to take another class. Even though I felt afraid, I was so curious about the practice. That second class was the game changer. Not only did I have a different experience on my mat, I had powerful experience off of my mat as the instructor made eye contact with me, called me by name and made an effort to ensure that I had been seen. I was hooked! In practice I’ve been able to find self love and compassion, physical strength and yep, even flexibility! I’ve found that self love is the true foundation for personal revolution and, that the practice of yoga is the gateway!

If I had to choose a moment that set the wheels in motion for what I’m doing right now, meeting her in class that day would be it. She solidified for me what I wished to be true; that there are people in this world who want to create community and connection and through something as simple as a glance and a smile.

Sharing this practice with everyone who wants it is my drive and our mission for Revolution Studio + Wellness Bar! Creating a space for all people regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or income to experience true inclusion and connection- to themselves and to others. . Revolution is an inviting space for people in the Rochester community of any financial background to take care of themselves without having to sacrifice rent to roll out their mat.
